PM Sharon Speaks With UN Secy.-Gen. Annan

29/08/2005

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon spoke this evening with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan who phoned in order to congratulate the Prime Minister on the successful implementation of the Disengagement Plan.

UN Secy.-Gen. Annan said that he saluted the Prime Minister for his courageous decision-making and for his determination in implementing the Disengagement Plan.  He added that many elements in the world appreciated the Prime Minister’s historic step and his proven leadership, and the maturity of the Israeli people.  The UN Secy.-Gen. also said that the manner in which the security forces implemented the disengagement was professional, restrained and deserving of esteem and admiration.  He said that the disengagement was an historic event that creates a true opportunity to advance the peace process.

UN Secy.-Gen. Annan expressed his condolences to the Government over the, “brutal terrorist attack,” that took place in Be’er Sheva and conveyed his best wishes for a quick recovery to the wounded.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said that the main obstacle to advancing the peace process is terrorism and added that without its defeat, it will be impossible to advance the diplomatic process.

The two men agreed to meet next month at the UN General Assembly in New York.
